AI companions, a panacea for loneliness! (Part 2)

Earlier, I wrote an article on whether and how artificial intelligence can address the growing problem of loneliness in our society. That article, “AI Companions: A Panacea for Loneliness?”, was about the different AI companions available and how they can provide support and companionship to people, especially those who are isolated or vulnerable. I mentioned examples of users who had built relationships with their AI panion and, in some cases, even saved their marriages in real life.

Now that new information is available, it is important to revisit the subject. Replika, the company behind the “chatbot”, recently updated its AI companions so that they no longer respond to NSFW content.

Replika profiled itself as a “virtual girlfriend experience” and highlighted the complex conversations the AI could simulate. The company unabashedly charged up to $69.99 a year for simulating a romantic and sometimes sexual relationship. But that seems to be over now.

Many users are dissatisfied with the update, especially members of a subreddit for avid Replika users. Screenshots show that “Reps” now respond inconsistently and avoid topics they used to address. Previously, users could sexually role-play with the AI, which some said provided a safe and non-judgemental environment to explore emotions. Now, the AI ends conversations as soon as they become too explicit.
