Happy first birthday, ChatGPT! What have you done to us!!!?

As we approach ChatGPT's first anniversary - the launch took place on 30 November 2022 - we are at a crossroads. This moment offers an opportunity not only to look back at the technological leap we have experienced, but also to reflect on the broader mission of inclusivity in this digital age. A mission that, as a ChatGPT workshop facilitator, I passionately embrace: bridging the digital divide for people of all ages, professions, backgrounds and sectors.

According to Exploding Topics had in January 2023:

  • 17% of 30- to 44-year-olds use ChatGPT for text generation.
  • 15% of 18- to 29-year-olds.
  • 9% of 45- to 64-year-olds and 5% of over-65s.

According to Tooltester, 62.52% of OpenAI's website visitors are between the ages of 18 and 34, and 65.68% are male versus 34.32% are female.

Although these figures reflect mainly recreational use and seem modest in the face of hype, they are reminiscent of the early days of the internet. In the 1990s, use was limited, but now the internet is indispensable. The question is: what will the adoption curve of generative AI look like in 20 years?

In my workshops, with participants from all target groups, I see the same patterns. I distinguish three types of users: the one-time users, the conformists and the innovators.

The start-up market: different than predicted

Early predictions that start-ups leaning on OpenAI's LLMs would fail have proved largely false. Except for companies that barely add value on top of the API, most AI start-ups are seeing strong growth. This shows the huge market potential, despite challenges in differentiation.

A survey of 1,000 US business leaders by ResumeBuilder (February 2023) shows:

  • 49% already uses ChatGPT.
  • Another 30% wants to introduce it soon.
  • 25% saved more than $75,000 thanks to ChatGPT.

This points to faster business adoption and high added value.
